Will had his annual visit with his kidney doctor (nephrologist, if you want the official term) today. Until now he'd gone every six months, but last August they saw enough improvement that once a year was going to be fine. We went a few weeks ago and he had an ultrasound done. The doctor was really pleased with what he saw on those. His good (left) kidney measured approximately nine centimeters. An average adult kidney is 12 centimeters! Will's kidney is larger than normal to compensate for there only being one. His bad kidney (or rather, the cysts in place of kidney) had shrunk three centimeters from last year. I thought that sounded pretty substantial, but apparently it's the amount of shrinkage they expected to see. The doctor was so pleased with it that now we don't have to go back for two more years! Woo hoo!
(BTW, when his kidney disease was first diagnosed we were told that his right kidney had never developed and there were cysts there in place of the kidney. The doctors said ideally the cysts would shrink over time and eventually be absorbed by the body.)
